Bouazizi Memorial

Just as fire devours itself to survive, losing everything to gain everything, the quest for democracy in the Middle East comes with heavy sacrifices. The Bouazizi Memorial does not attempt to recreate or represent the physical manifestations of the revolutions but strives to capture and evoke the contrasting sensations of optimism and violence embodied within the hearts of the men and women of the Arab Spring.
Using footage of an oil fire in Kuwait as inspiration, I embarked on a form finding journey in an attempt to capture the dynamism of the billowing flames. From the manipulation of light and matter to the choreography of form, this project challenged me to rethink the way I perceived the world and how form and materiality can be crafted to communicate affectively.
Phase 2: Interior model
In this multilayered interior model made of baked clay, melted plexi and scorched styrofoam, the components worked together to create different atmospheres throughout the day to emulate the dynamics of a fire.
